Remembering Daphne McKenna

The Damilola Taylor Trust is working in partnership with the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) and an experienced film maker to produce a short film in memory of Daphne McKenna.

Daphne was a social worker with a tireless commitment to safeguarding children. Her career in social work embodied fundamental themes in social work culture and practice including local community orientation; trans-disciplinary working; the responsibility to protect individuals from harm; education and training for best practice.

Part memorial, part celebration, the film aims to create a lasting learning resource for social work education which can be used to encourage people (often from non-professional community backgrounds) to see social work as a future profession that can benefit from their values and experience.

The film will consist of collective discussions and individual interviews with professional colleagues and friends who worked with Daphne. They will give their perspective on Daphne’s work, the qualities and values that she brought, her approach to social work practice and its continuing importance to the future of the profession.

The film will be launched in late 2021 to coincide with the publication of some of Daphne’s training materials.
